Bringing Light to the Dark Side

Smith Boykin

Thanks for visiting my Team HFOT fundraising page for the Star Wars Half Marathon - The Dark Side (04/23/17). When I entered this year's race, I committed to raise funds & awareness for Homes for Our Troops, a 501(c)(3) organization that builds specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans all over the country (including one home planned for Madison, Mississippi). Homes built by HFOT provide freedom, independence and basic comfort for those who have made great personal sacrifices for us and our country. HFOT has earned a Four Star rating by Charity Navigator, offering assurance that our donations will be put to the use for which they are intended.

In the past year, I've studied and been inspired by the life and leadership lessons provided by the service of U.S. Navy SEAL Team 3's Task Unit Bruiser in Operation Iraqi Freedom. These lessons are on display in the book Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win, written by Jocko Willink (TUB's commander during the Battle of Ramadi) and Leif Babin (platoon commander for TUB's Charlie Platoon), and on the Jocko Podcast (weekly episodes available on iTunes and Stitcher). To honor TUB's service and sacrifices, I'm dedicating my first fundraising goal ($802.06) to Marc Lee, a member of TUB's Charlie Platoon who would be my age if he were alive today. Marc made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his SEAL teammates during a firefight in Ramadi on 08/02/06. For his courage and heroism, Marc was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart.

I greatly appreciate your consideration and hope you will join me in this fundraising effort for HFOT - whether to honor Marc Lee, his fellow SEALs or any and all of the brave and selfless members (past or present) of our military.

Thanks for your support!
